A youth raising his voice of protest at the program of former US President Trump.
Washington – US presidential candidate Donald Trump faced a barrage of boos and protests at the Libertarian National Convention on Saturday night, with many in the rowdy audience heckling and provoking him, a marked change from the ovation he has received from his ardently loyal supporters at his rallies.
Libertarians, who believe in limited government and individual liberty, blamed Republicans and former president Trump for rushing to develop a vaccine during the COVID-19 pandemic and not doing more to enforce public health restrictions (physical distancing) among unvaccinated people. Trump was jeered and loudly booed as he took the stage in Washington. A small section of the crowd cheered him on. Shortly before Trump appeared, a Libertarian Party member shouted: “Donald Trump should have been shot!” This caused uproar at the event.
Trump did not respond
Trump, who was booed at the event, did not immediately respond to a request for comment when asked about whether he had received a hostile reception at the event during his campaign.
Trump, who was president between 2017 and 2021, immediately referred to the total 88 felony charges leveled against him in four federal and state prosecutions. “If I wasn’t a libertarian then, I am now,” he said. He denounced the administration of President Joe Biden, his opponent in the November 5 election. Biden, a fellow Democrat, was part of a “rise in left-wing fascism.” Trump tried to appeal to those liberals. This election is expected to be a close fight between Trump and Biden.
Join us to defeat Biden
Trump told liberals that we should not fight among ourselves. He asked liberals to work with him to defeat Biden. His appeal was welcomed by many, although the vast majority in the crowd was strongly opposed to Biden and his administration. Libertarians received only 1.2% of the national vote in 2020, or about 1.8 million votes, but the US presidential election in November could be decided by just 10,000 votes. So Trump is trying to bring some liberal supporters to his side.
Trump’s appearance at the unusual gathering for a Republican White House nominee also signaled how seriously he and his campaign take the threat posed by third-party candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has long opposed vaccines and mandates, and who said Friday at the convention that Trump, who is running as an independent, is stepping up attacks on Kennedy, recently calling him a “fake” anti-vaccination proponent.
Opinion Poll Report
Opinion polls suggest Kennedy would take away some votes from both Trump and Biden in their camp, but it is not yet clear which of the major party candidates would be more harmed by Kennedy’s long-shot White House bid. Libertarian Party organizers said Biden was also invited to speak at the convention but declined to attend. “The Libertarian Party can make a big difference. If we unite, we will be unstoppable,” Trump said to applause and jeers. Trump said he is a Libertarian “without even trying to be one” and that the Libertarian Party should support him. (Reuters)
