Chennai . Russia is waging a war against Ukraine, but its integrated nuclear power company Rosatom continues to manufacture the components needed for the 1,000 MW plant being built in Kudankulam, Tamil Nadu.
According to Rosatom, its machine manufacturing division Petrozavodskmash has started manufacturing guide vans for housing the Reactor Coolant Pump Set (RCPS) for the fifth unit at Kudankulam.
Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), India’s nuclear power plant operator, has two 1,000 MW plants (Units 1 and 2) in Kudankulam, while four more (Units 3, 4, 5 and 6) are under construction.
All six units are built with Russian technology and equipment supplied by Rosatom.
According to Rosatom, the first guide vanes have already passed the fitting-up and welding operations.
As with the other three guide vans, the fit-up quality has been inspected and the Petrozavodskmash workers are ready for welding operations.
Guide vane refers to RCPS internals and consists of upper and lower discs, between which 13 guide blades are to be welded.
The guide vanes are to be rigidly mounted in the pump housing and are intended to determine the centrifugal direction of the coolant flow inside the pump.
RCPS Housing is a first class security item. The reactor plant equipment of a power unit consists of four RCP sets.
Anyway, NPCIL officials are wondering about the impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict on the delivery of nuclear power plant components from Russia’s Rosatom for the four plants under construction.
NPCIL has to arrange for ships to bring reactor components from Russia to India.
Following the Russian military operation in Ukraine, the US, UK and other Western countries have imposed economic sanctions on Russia.
Speaking to -AnyTV News on condition of anonymity, a senior NPCIL official had said that the shipping sector has been affected due to the conflict.
The official also said that Rosatom will inform about the items that can be lifted from Russia and ships will be arranged accordingly.
