Russia Ukraine Conflict: On the one hand, the danger of war between Ukraine and Russia is increasing, while on the other hand the western countries have started showing their economic power. According to the news agency AFP, British PM Boris Johnson has said that Britain is going to impose sanctions on 5 banks of Russia. Also, sanctions will be imposed on three ‘high net worth persons’ from Russia. Earlier, PM Johnson promised after meeting with the security chief on Tuesday that Britain would impose tough economic sanctions against Russia. He claimed that these sanctions would greatly affect Russia. At the same time, in the event of an attack, we will take more stringent measures.

Why is there a mobilization against Russia?
Russian President Vladimir Putin has recognized two Russian-backed separatist regions in eastern Ukraine – Donetsk and the Luhansk People’s Republic – as “independent” countries. Not only this, Putin has ordered the Russian army to “maintain peace” in the separatist regions of eastern Ukraine. This order is being seen as the deployment of Russian forces in both these areas. Putin’s decision has escalated the tension between Ukraine and Russia. Western countries are considering this as an aggressive action.
What has happened so far?
- The US has taken the first step by banning American individuals from any financial transactions with the territories separated from Ukraine (Donetsk and Luhansk).
- Germany has announced the suspension of its Nord Stream 2 pipeline project with Russia. This plan was considered very important for the supply of gas in Europe.
- Along with Britain, the European Union has also spoken of imposing strict sanctions against Russia. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said the union would take steps from Tuesday afternoon.
- The US welcomed Germany’s move, saying more sanctions would be announced against Russia soon.
- NATO has called an urgent meeting with the representative of Ukraine. It is expected that it will discuss security related issues in the event of war.
By the way, it is difficult to say how much this economic sanctions of Western countries will hurt Russia and how effective these sanctions will be in preventing Russia from attacking.
