According to the report published in the Lancet after a study conducted in 20 countries, the number of deaths in the first 14 months almost doubled between just six months (May 1 to October 31, 2021). If we look at the total children destitute from COVID all over the world, 2 out of 3 were in adolescence.
According to lead researcher Juliet Unwin of the Imperial College of London, Britain, the number of children who are destitute from COVID may increase even more as the figures of deaths from COVID-19 are recorded in the world.
Unwin says, if we look at the real time data of orphans till January 2022, then this number reaches 67 lakhs. The data has been taken in the study only till October 2021, while the epidemic is still going on all over the world. It is clear that the number of children orphaned by COVID will also increase.
Men died 3 times more than women
The highest rate of orphaned children was in Peru, South Africa, where 8 to 7 were destitute per 1000 children. Whereas men died three times more than women in the world.
Lead researcher Susan Hillis of the US Centers for Disease Control of Prevention says that in the study, one child has been taken to be orphaned or destitute relative to every death due to COVID. In this way, every six seconds a child was at risk, unless he was helped in time. In future, such children will have to be connected to the surveillance system to be monitored.
