The effect of the scorching heat has now been seen on diesel as well. Due to the continuous scorching heat in some parts of the country, there has been a decline in the demand for diesel in June due to the decrease in travel. Fuel sales, which traditionally increase during elections, have been contrary to the trend this year and are declining on a monthly basis. According to Bhasha’s news, this decline continues even after the general elections are over.
Fuel consumption should have increased
According to the news, diesel sales fell by 3.9 percent during June 1 to 15 compared to the same period last year and stood at 39.5 lakh tonnes. Demand for the most consumed fuel in the country fell by 2.3 percent in April and 2.7 percent in March. It fell by 1.1 percent in May. Apart from election campaigning, the summer harvest season and scorching heat increase the demand for AC in cars, which should have increased fuel consumption. However, this year this trend has reversed. Petrol and diesel prices were reduced by two rupees per liter in mid-March, ending a nearly two-year-long gap in rate revision, which should have also boosted sales.
Petrol sales also fell
Petrol sales declined 3.6 per cent on a monthly basis to 14.7 lakh tonnes consumed during May 1-15. Diesel demand remained stable on a monthly basis as against 35.4 lakh tonnes in the first fortnight of May. Diesel is the most consumed fuel in India, accounting for nearly 40 per cent of all petroleum product consumption. The transport sector accounts for 70 per cent of total diesel sales in the country.
Price of aviation fuel and cooking gas
It is the main fuel used in agricultural sectors including harvesters and tractors. The demand for aviation fuel increased by 2.3 per cent year-on-year to 3,31,000 tonnes between June 1 and 15, 2024. The demand for LPG increased by 0.1 per cent year-on-year to 12.4 lakh tonnes during June 1 to 15.
