Musharraf was the mastermind of the Kargil war
Musharraf, who has been living in Dubai since 2016, breathed his last on Sunday. Musharraf had written the script of the Kargil war. The war began after the then Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif signed a historic peace accord with his Indian counterpart Atal Bihari Vajpayee in Lahore. After the failure in Kargil, Musharraf removed the then Prime Minister Sharif in a coup in 1999. He ruled Pakistan from 1999 to 2008, holding various positions.
Musharraf was convicted in March 2014 of suspending the constitution on 3 November 2007. In December 2019, a special court sentenced Musharraf to death in a high treason case. The former military ruler went to Dubai in March 2016 for medical treatment.
Musharraf was born on 11 August 1943 in Delhi. His family moved from New Delhi to Karachi in 1947. He joined the Pakistan Army in 1964. He graduated from the Army Staff and Command College, Quetta.
