Dhaka: Bangladesh Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmood said on Thursday that India has offered assistance in the construction of a reservoir on the Teesta river across the border in Bangladesh. Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra, who is on a visit to Bangladesh, met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Hassan, after which the Bangladeshi minister gave this information.
Information not given in detail
Kwatra had reached Dhaka on Wednesday evening. “You know we have started a big project related to Teesta,” Mahmood told reporters after meeting Kwatra. India wants to finance it. We said the project should be in line with our needs, it has to meet our needs.” However, the minister did not elaborate on India’s proposal.
China’s eyes are on
Bangladesh had a few months ago said it would look into the “geopolitics” associated with the Chinese proposal to build a reservoir on the Teesta, which enters Bangladesh from India. Kwatra had also met Prime Minister Hasina earlier in the day, but no official statement was issued in this regard. The sharing of Teesta waters is a controversial issue between India and Bangladesh. For this reason Bangladesh has taken the initiative to construct the reservoir. The special thing is that China has immediately expressed its willingness to support this project.
discussion on other issues
The Bangladesh Foreign Minister said the issue of border killings also came up during his talks with Kwatra. The minister said talks were also held with Kwatra on simplifying the visa system as a large number of Bangladeshis go to India for treatment. The top official of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs has assured them of doing more to make the process easier. Hassan said they also discussed New Delhi’s cooperation in importing power from Nepal and Bhutan through India.
Siliguri corridor was also discussed
India is said to have conveyed its objections to Bangladesh over China’s participation in a major project along its strategically important Siliguri corridor. Siliguri Corridor is also called ‘Chicken’s Neck’. It is a narrow strip of land that connects mainland India to its north-eastern states. (Language)
