Why did Sindhu Darshan Yatra start?
After Atal Bihari Vajpayee stepped down from the post of Prime Minister, Sindhu Ghat was not a target. It came back to the forefront after Narendra Modi’s government was formed in 2014. A post on social media platform ‘X’ mentions Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s sudden visit to Ladakh on July 3, 2020, which says that after India gained independence, it was widely believed that the entire Indus river had become part of Pakistan. However, the rediscovery of parts of the river flowing through Leh district in 1996 led to the launch of ‘Sindhu Darshan Yatra’ in 1997. The historic event was attended by 72 prominent personalities from across the country, including Narendra Modi, who was then in the BJP, along with Lal Krishna Advani, George Fernandes, Sahib Singh Verma, Farooq Abdullah and other political dignitaries.
PM participated in this trip many times
During the first visit, Narendra Modi also met Pandit Jasraj and the two together sang devotional songs on the riverbank. Narendra Modi has attended the Sindhu Darshan Yatra several times since it began in 1997. While serving as the BJP’s national general secretary in 2000, he was present when Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee inaugurated the annual festival celebrating the cultural and spiritual significance of the Indus river.
