Election results to be released in South Africa.
Before India, the results of the general elections in South Africa are going to come. Despite the threats of former South African President Jacob Zuma, the announcement of the election results has been made today. Due to this, the whole world is looking at the election results of South Africa. Cyril Ramaphosa is the current President of South Africa. South Africa has strong relations with India. Ramaphosa and PM Modi have a deep friendship.
South Africa’s Independent Electoral Commission said it will continue to declare final results of the country’s general and provincial elections on Sunday afternoon despite threats to postpone further results over alleged irregularities. In a media briefing late Saturday, Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) CEO Mosotho Moepya said the authority would work overnight to resolve 579 objections in order to go ahead with the scheduled declaration. President Cyril Ramaphosa will then deliver an address.
what did jacob zuma say
Earlier, speaking on behalf of 26 smaller parties in the election, former president Jacob Zuma called on the IEC to give more time to lodge objections. He said there were many more “serious” objections that parties need to prepare. However, he did not share any details of other allegations. Zuma had said that “we will need more time. Nobody should announce the election result tomorrow (Sunday). Zuma strongly threatened that if the IEC goes ahead with its plan for Sunday, it would be “inciting people”. “Nobody will die if the results are not announced tomorrow,” Zuma said.
It’s better if you don’t cause trouble
Jacob Zuma had said that “don’t deliberately start trouble when there is no trouble”. He warned the IEC that a commission was needed to investigate the complaints because “those who are in charge cannot investigate it themselves”. If the IEC persisted with its plan, the 26 parties would be forced to seek legal intervention. Moepya said that although all complaints were to be received by the IEC within 48 hours of the polls closing at 9pm on Wednesday, the authority had allowed an extension until 6pm on Saturday. Zuma is the leader of the Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) party, which was launched a few months ago and pulled off a major upset by winning the most votes in his home province of KwaZulu-Natal, ending the African National Congress’ (ANC) majority in that province.
MK has majority in many provinces too, but forming government is an obstacle
In addition, MK also won substantial votes in other provinces. Analysts credited it with playing a major role in reducing the more than 40 percent majority that had kept the ANC in power since it first won power in 1994 under the leadership of Nelson Mandela. Although the ANC won the most votes nationally, it did not secure more than 50 percent of the votes needed to form a government. Legal advisors and analysts on several channels were unanimous that the IEC was acting completely within the rules of law and constitution in its actions. (PTI)
