An Indian businessman has been arrested in Sri Lanka, facing the biggest economic crisis in the country’s history, for attempting to smuggle foreign currency. Foreign currency worth over Rs 4 crore was seized from the 45-year-old man, following which he was arrested from the airport.
According to the report released in this regard, the identity of this person has not been revealed. It was arrested by security officials from Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) on Sunday. He had come to Sri Lanka in connection with business. The report said security officers found 117,000 Canadian dollars and 19,000 euros after a search of his suitcase. Their total value is more than about four crore rupees.
The report said security officers checked the luggage of the passenger after he behaved in a suspicious manner. In fact, the authorities noticed that this passenger was going to the toilet of the passenger terminal departing from the airport several times in a very short time. From here he had to board an Indigo flight to Chennai.
However, the passenger and the foreign currency recovered from him were handed over to the customs officials at Katunayake airport for further investigation. At the same time, the passenger was ordered to pay a fine of Rs 10,000. It is to be known that the foreign exchange reserves in Sri Lanka are almost completely exhausted and inflation has reached the peak in the country. Due to all this, the local people are also fascinated for essential goods.
