Colombo: Sri Lanka has openly praised India after coming out of the economic crisis. This is also a good example of the deepening relations between India and Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe said on Saturday that Sri Lanka has been able to overcome two difficult years of economic crisis and this has been possible due to the financial assistance of $ 3.5 billion received from India. Wickremesinghe emphasized his commitment to maintain a strong partnership with India. Addressing the 31st All India Partner Meeting held from June 20-22 in Colombo, Wickremesinghe said that during his last visit to India to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the new government, he had discussed key areas of partnership with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He said, “After going through two difficult years, I have to admit that this was possible because India gave us a loan of $3.5 billion. All of that will be repaid.” Wickremesinghe said green energy is one of the key areas on which the two countries will work jointly. He said, “Last week when I was in Delhi, I discussed with Prime Minister Modi the need to take forward the joint program that we have decided, agreed upon. So the major programs have been identified.” He said Sri Lanka has discussed several proposals.
Grid interconnection to be established between Sri Lanka and India
Wickremesinghe said, “The first is grid interconnection between Sri Lanka and India, so that environmentally friendly energy can be sent to India, where you all need it very much. We have the Sampur Solar Energy Project, which is an intergovernmental project and a three-island project, where we hope to lay the foundation stone in July.” He said that apart from this, focus is also being given on the project to establish land connectivity between Sri Lanka and India.
