new Delhi. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the national capital on Thursday. He stressed the need to introduce Production Linked Incentive Scheme (PLI) for the footwear manufacturing sector. They discussed setting up of Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) laboratory in the state, supply of coal in sufficient quantity as agreed and sharing of cess and surcharge with the states.
During the meeting with the Prime Minister, Stalin submitted a memorandum listing various demands of the state.
Stalin said Tamil Nadu is a major player in the footwear industry nationally and globally, accounting for 26 per cent of the national manufacturing output and 45 per cent of the national exports.
A PLI scheme for footwear manufacturing will enhance the productivity of the existing players and make India the most preferred destination for footwear exporters.
Stalin said the scheme would further assist in import substitution for input products such as jewellery, zippers, soles, buckles and embellishments.
Stalin cited 1,507.23 acres of additional land near the Salem Steel Plant and urged the central government to transfer it so that it can be used for the Defense Industrial Park.
Referring to the shortfall in the supply of coal for thermal plants by Coal India, Stalin said that the Ministry of Power/Ministry of Coal may be requested to allocate 40.2 lakh tonnes of coal per annum from the Singareni Collieries Company Limited.
Stalin also urged Modi that the central government should reverse the levy of cess and surcharge and merge all such cesses and surcharges with the basic rate of tax, so that states get their legitimate share of revenue.
