International Idea Study: You must know about the claims made in a study amid the general elections taking place in India. Most of the Indian population wants a ‘strong’ leader and is satisfied with the functioning of the central government. This claim has been made in a study conducted on voters in 19 countries including the world’s three largest democracies. According to the study, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s domestic approval rating in India has remained at 66 percent or above for a long time. It says that many Indians want a strong leader.
Survey conducted in these countries
The report titled ‘Perceptions of Democracy: A Survey on Assessment of Democracy around the World’ was released on Thursday by the ‘International Institute of Democracy and Electoral Assistance’ (International IDEA). The survey was conducted in 19 countries including India, America, Denmark, Italy, Brazil, Pakistan and Iraq. Along with this, surveys were also conducted in Taiwan, Chile, Colombia, The Gambia, Lebanon, Lithuania, Romania, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, South Korea and Tanzania. International IDEA was founded in 1995 to support sustainable democracy around the world.
People looked satisfied in India and Tanzania
The study said that in the countries surveyed, people appeared to be generally more dissatisfied with their governments than satisfied. However, “in India and Tanzania, people appeared to be satisfied with their governments,” it said, adding that 59 percent and 79 percent of people in India and Tanzania, respectively, expressed satisfaction or complete satisfaction with their governments.
This was said in the report
This 95-page report says, “In 8 out of 19 countries, most people want a ‘strong leader’.” There is no country where a majority of respondents have ‘highly unfavorable’ views about non-democratic leadership. In countries with higher levels of representation, people supported ‘strong leaders’ less, but India and Tanzania supported ‘strong leaders’ more.” The study was conducted in India in January this year and in other countries last year.
