Born on April 12, 1943, in the town of Chiplun, Maharashtra, Sumitra belonged to a Konkanstha Brahmin family. She moved to Indore in 1965 after marrying Jayant Mahajan. From here he traveled to the post of Senior Councilor in Municipal Corporation, then Deputy Mayor of the city, Union Minister and then Speaker of Lok Sabha. You will be surprised to know about her that she was not a political activist, but a Ramkatha writer. After marriage, she completed her MA and LLB. During this time he came in contact with Maina Tai Gokhale of Indore, who preached on Ramayana and Sumitra started living with him. When Maina Tai became unwell, Sumitra Mahajan took over her work and started preaching in her place. After this she joined ‘Rashtriya Sevika Samiti’, the women’s wing of ‘Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’ and ‘Bhagini Mandal’, an organization of Maharashtrian women. He started his political career with Indore Municipal Corporation elections in the year 1982 and won the majority. Thereafter he was elected senior councillor.
After this, in the year 1984, the party made him the Deputy Mayor. In the year 1985, contested from Indore number three but she could not win. After facing this defeat, Sumitra once again took up her old job of discourse. In 1989, returning to politics at the behest of his party BJP, Indore contested the general elections and defeated Prakash Chandra Sethi, a veteran Congress leader and former Home Minister of the country. After that he represented Indore region in Lok Sabha for eight consecutive times.
