In the midst of months-long discord in Punjab Congress, the high command may take a decision on suspension of former state president Sunil Jakhar. A notice was issued to him for his anti-party statements and a reply was sought within a week. On receiving no response from him on this, the Disciplinary Committee of the Congress has recommended suspension of Jakhar for two years. He is accused of making statements against the party in the recent assembly elections and this weakened the prospects of the Congress.
After the meeting of the disciplinary committee in Delhi, Tariq Anwar said that the committee has submitted its recommendation to Congress President Sonia Gandhi. In this, action has been suggested against Sunil Jakhar. Meanwhile, before the meeting, Sunil Jakhar had made a tweet showing his attitude. He had written, today sir will be his pen, in whom there is still conscience left. He did not write anything other than this one line in his tweet, but the indication was clear that he was talking about the meeting of the disciplinary committee. Talking to the media, Anwar said that the committee has unanimously recommended action against Jakhar.
Tariq Anwar has not said what action will be taken against Jakhar, but he is believed to have been recommended to be suspended from the party for two years. Meanwhile, Sunil Jakhar’s nephew and Congress MLA from Abohar seat Sandeep Jakhar has also reacted. Sandeep said that if such action is taken against him then it will be wrong. “Jakhar sahib is a senior Congress leader and has traditionally been a part of the party. He has always worked for the party. He said that everyone in the party should be treated equally.
After the action, factionalism will increase in Congress
After the action on Sunil Jakhar, there is also a possibility of further increase of factionalism in the Congress. In fact, in the past, many senior leaders including Navjot Singh Sidhu had met him and expressed support. Navjot Singh Sidhu has also directly questioned the decisions of the high command many times. It is believed that if action is taken against Jakhar, a faction can go on a direct rebellion. Congress secretary Raminder Awla has also supported Sunil Jakhar. That is why the intensification of factionalism cannot be ruled out due to the action on former Punjab Congress leader Sunil Jakhar.
