A bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and Surya Kant had accepted the resignation of Professor Ravi Chopra as the chairman of the committee, who had written a letter in this regard in January last. Attorney General KK Venugopal, representing the central government, told the bench that since Justice (Retd) Sikri was already appointed by this court as the chairman of the monitoring committee to look into environmental concerns and other issues related to the Chardham project Therefore, it would be better to appoint him as the chairperson of the High Powered Committee (HPC).

In another case, the Supreme Court urged the Committee on Prison Reforms to submit its final report within six months. This committee has been constituted to review and recommend other issues including imprisonment of more than the prescribed number of prisoners in the jail.
A bench of Justices LN Rao and BR Gavai passed this order while hearing the plea of the Central Government. The Center had appealed to direct the committee on prison reforms to submit its final report in three months. The committee is headed by Amittva Rao, a retired Supreme Court judge.
