The ruling DMK has got a landslide victory in the civic elections held after 11 years in Tamil Nadu. The AIADMK has also faced defeat in Salem, the home constituency of Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister E Palaniswami (EPS). Even in the ward where the EPS resides, the DMK has registered a victory.
BJP also open account in Chennai
DMK has got majority on its own in Greater Chennai Corporation also. DMK has so far won 146 in the 200-ward Greater Chennai Corporation. AIADMK has won on 16, Congress on 13. BJP has also been successful in winning in one ward. Similarly, DMK alliance has won 45 out of 60 wards of Vellore in Chennai. AIADMK could register victory in just seven wards.
Voting took place on 19 February

These elections were held for 12 thousand 838 posts in 649 urban bodies and 490 urban panchayats, 138 municipalities, 21 corporations. A total of 74,416 candidates were in the fray in these elections. The results of the municipal elections were declared on Tuesday. Counting of votes took place at 268 polling stations.

Local body elections were not held in the state for the last decade. Earlier in 2011, local body elections were held here. At that time AIADMK was in power in the state. The ruling AIADMK had won a major victory in the civic polls. He got more than 39% of the votes. At the same time, DMK had to be satisfied with about 26 per cent votes.
Transgender DMK candidate wins in Vellore
DMK candidate Ganga Nayak has won in Vellore. Ganga belongs to the transgender community. The 49-year-old Ganga has been associated with the DMK for the last twenty years. He has won from Ward No 37 of Vellore. Active in politics for 20 years, Ganga was contesting an election for the first time. Ganga’s parents were daily wage labourers. Ganga is known for her social work in Vellore. Ganga and her colleagues also conducted several awareness programs in Vellore and surrounding districts during the Corona pandemic. Not only DMK, AIADMK and BJP also fielded transgender candidates in these elections. A total of 15 transgenders were in the fray this time.
Mother-son, husband-wife are also among the winners
In Madurai district, a mother and her son have won in two different wards. Ward 13 of Sodhavandhan in Madurai district was won by her mother Vallimayil and her son Maa Maruthupandiyan from Ward 8. Both had contested the elections as independents. In Anganallur Nagar Panchayat, DMK’s GL Renuka Iswari and her husband Ra Govindaraj won from Ward 4 and Ward 5. Banu Sathiyamurthy and her husband Sathiyamurthy have won Ward 17 and Ward 18 from Kundrathur Municipality in Kancheepuram. Both were DMK candidates.
