china ship
Beijing: China’s bullying in the South China Sea shows no signs of stopping. On Monday, a Chinese ship and a Philippines supply ship collided near the disputed Spratly Islands in the South China Sea. China’s Coast Guard has made this claim. The Chinese Coast Guard said that the incident took place after a Philippines supply ship entered the water area near the submerged rock ‘Second Thomas Shoal’ in the Spratly Islands. Many countries claim the Spratly Islands to be a part of their respective territories. China wants to maintain its dominance over the South China Sea.
The collision occurred because of this
The Chinese coast guard said in a statement on social media platform WeChat that a Philippine supply ship ignored repeated warnings from China and approached a Chinese ship in an unprofessional manner and dangerously, resulting in a collision. “The Philippines is fully responsible for this accident,” the statement said.
What the Philippines said
Regarding the case, the Philippines says that the ‘Second Thomas Shoal’ is located less than 200 nautical miles (about 370 kilometers) from its coastline and falls within its internationally recognized exclusive economic zone. The Philippines cites a 2016 international arbitration arrangement, which invalidated China’s extensive claims in the South China Sea on historical grounds.
China has done such things before
This is not the first time that such tension has escalated between China and the Philippines. Earlier too, the Chinese coast guards have targeted Philippines ships. Last year too, the Chinese coast guards deliberately rammed a Philippines ship with their ship and stopped it from moving forward. The Chinese coast guards did not stop here, they also sprayed water on the Philippines teams. Then the Philippines coast guards alleged that the Chinese coast guards sprayed water on three of its ships in the disputed shoal area and hit one of them, causing serious damage to the ship’s engine.
