There is a population of about 5 lakhs in the area of one and a half kilometer of Jahangirpuri in North West Delhi, where people from the states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Gujarat etc. have settled. Initially, most of the slums were settled in the area, after which gradually smaller houses started being built.
Lakhs of people living in small houses are engaged in the activities of scavengers, running shops, driving rickshaws, working in factories, trading of bangles, selling fish, setting up vegetable markets etc.
Zahid, a member of the Aman Committee formed in Jahangirpuri, who is also associated with the BJP, told that in the 1970s, people from UP, Rajasthan and Bihar were associated with the mandis in this area, because of the mandis, people came here. started settling down. At the same time, people who came from Bihar also used to do bangles work. Also people from Bengal used to do the work of rag picker but now many families have started their own business too.
Jahangirpuri is divided into three assembly constituencies of Delhi, Adarshnagar, Badli and Burari. At the same time, three MPs and 6 councilors together provide basic facilities in the area. The MPs include Hansraj Hans, Manoj Tiwari and Dr Harsh Vardhan, while the MLAs are Ajesh Yadav, Sanjeev Jha and Pawan Sharma and the councilors are Poonam Bagri, Ajay Sharma, Surendra Kharab, Garima Gupta and Mukesh Goyal.
According to Zahid, Indira Gandhi had come here during the floods in 1978 and only after that colonies started forming here. There used to be only forest in this entire area and during that time the people who had houses here, they sold the house for only 200 rupees and left.
The Jama Masjid in front of which this violence took place, the foundation of that mosque was laid in 1978, then it gradually went on to become a mosque, as well as the work of making the Kali Mandir built along with the mosque, about 6 years after this mosque, in 1984. started.
According to the experts of the area, it was the Muslims who came from Bengal living here during that time that started the construction of this temple. Though the area has never witnessed violence like this before, temples, mosques and gurudwaras are built around in the E block of the area and all have been living together for years.
In the papers of Jahangirpuri area, the houses are made of 22 and a half yards. Talking about the block, it includes double E, E block, D block, G block, H block, H1, H2, H3, H4, C block, J block etc. There are some blocks in which slums are settling.
Historian Vivek Shukla, who has written on the history of Delhi for years, told -AnyTV News that, in 1975, when the Emergency came in the country, four colonies were rebuilt in Delhi and slum dwellers were settled there. These include a Jahangirpuri, Mongol Puri, Khichdipur and Turkman Gate.
People from the slums of New Delhi and South Delhi were resettled in Jahangirpuri, Mangolpuri and Khichdipur. There were a good number of Valmiki and Dhobi during that time, Turkman Gate had a good number of Muslims who went to Ranjit Nagar and started settling in Jahangirpuri in 1976.
Meanwhile, the BJP is also accusing the Delhi government of settling Rohingya and Bangladeshi Muslims.
Some knowledgeable people of the area told that, there are more people of West Bengal in this area, due to this their language is similar to that of Bangladeshis. Not that Rohingyas and Bangladeshis live here. People from different states are settled in Delhi.
According to the information received, there are few Bangladeshis in the area who have been living here for years. Although they have documents of India whether it is Aadhar card, PAN card or other documents.
In fact, during the procession of Hanuman Jayanti on Saturday, violence took place and communal tension increased in the area. Although the police is investigating this violence and so far many people have been arrested.
