Puducherry. Residents of Lospet area of Puducherry were thrown into panic when two people riding a bike warned that a tiger was roaming in the area. Apart from this warning, pictures of the alleged ‘tiger’ were shared on social media platforms. The police took immediate action on this situation and examined the CCTV footage of the area in an attempt to locate the tiger. Only then was the secret revealed that it was actually a stray dog with orange and black stripes. Now the police is searching for two people who left the dog on the streets after painting it.
Lawspet Police Inspector Venkatachalapathi said that considering the absence of tiger habitat in this area, there is no possibility of the tiger wandering into this area. It seems that some people painted a stray dog with orange and black stripes to imitate a tiger. In the darkness, people mistook it for some wild animal. We have started searching for the dog. Our investigation has revealed that he lives near the Puducherry-Tamil Nadu border. Till now we have not received any formal complaint.
Puducherry lawyer Karthikeyan said that this act is a crime according to the law. Speaking to Local18, Karthikeyan said that painting a street dog also comes under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. He emphasized that those who behave like this should be given strict punishment. Puducherry Police stressed that people taking part in such activities should be arrested. He appealed to the public to report any cases of ill-treatment of animals seen on social media directly to police stations instead of merely watching them.

Advocate Karthikeyan said that there is a rule to give significant punishment for such wrongdoing. For committing such a crime for the first time, a fine is imposed under the IPC Act. Individuals may face one or two years’ imprisonment for repeat offenses. Advocate Karthikeyan hoped that the imposition of such punishments would promote a culture of affection and care towards pets and animals among the population.
