It is used in deadly diseases ranging from insect bites to cancer. The name of this medicinal plant is “Satuva” but with the changing times this herb is becoming extinct from the Himalayas. Illegal exploitation and black marketing are putting Satuva in danger. In such a situation, the scientists of High Himalayan Plant Physiology Research Center (HAPPRC) are working on its cultivation from field to lab. ,
Dr. Babita Patni, Assistant Professor of Heprec Department at HNB Garhwal University, says that Satuva is a medicinal plant which is used in minor to major diseases. Due to the medicinal properties found in Satuva, it is in great demand in the market, but this herb is not available as per the demand. Satva is used locally to cure fever, headache, wounds and burns. It is also used as a tonic. Its rhizome is used for stomach ache, or to remove stomach worms, kill insects, remove mucus.
huge loss due to smuggling
Dr. Babita Patni says that the germination rate of Satuva is very slow. Due to which it may take about two years for it to grow completely. Due to increasing human interference, the Satuva species is on the verge of extinction. Due to continuous exploitation its existence is under threat. Satuva has been kept in the category of rare species. Despite this, due to good price, it is smuggled in many parts of Uttarakhand. While exploiting it, people are also damaging the mother plant of Satuva. Due to which the germination speed of this herb is slowing down.
Effective in treating cancer
Dr. Babita Patni says that people living in hilly areas have been using Satuva as a medicine since ancient times. It is a herb found in areas at an altitude of 1700 meters to 2400 meters. Its use provides relief from insect bites. Satuva is also a panacea for deadly diseases like cancer. Phyto active component is found in Satuva due to which big pharmaceutical companies use Satuva to make medicines. Anti-fungal and healing properties are also found in it.
Effort to connect farmers with Satva cultivation
Dr. Babita Patni tells that work is being done by Heprek Institute to preserve this precious herb. Besides, farmers are also being motivated to cultivate it. So that along with being protected, it can also become a source of livelihood for the farmers. Dr. Babita Patni says that it is important to take care of the quality of the soil while cultivating Satuva. Also, there is a fixed time for its planting. This plant is planted in the month of November-December and sprouts start appearing by April-May. The plant becomes ready by the month of September and November next year.
