Tokyo, July 23 (IANS) Only around 950 people, including officials and journalists, will be allowed into the main stadium for Friday’s opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics, a senior organizing committee official has said. Hidemasa Nakamura, head of Tokyo 2020’s main operations center, said in a press briefing that in addition to the above group, the rest of the people visiting the stadium are artists and athletes participating in the event, Xinhua news agency reported.
The Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee also reported 12 new positive COVID-19 cases related to the Olympics on Thursday, with two infected foreign athletes in the sports village.A total of 87 people linked to the Olympics have so far tested positive for the virus in Tokyo since the local organizing committee began recording figures on July 1. Fans have been banned from attending the opening ceremony due to concerns of Kovid-19.
