A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck the Vanuatu Islands, located in the Pacific Ocean near New Zealand, on Sunday. After this, a tsunami warning was issued for the surrounding sea areas. The US Geological Survey reported that the epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 27 km, about 23 km from Port Olary. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami warning for coasts within 300 kilometers of the center. At present, there is no news of loss of life or property.
There is a high risk of earthquakes in Vanuatu, where about 2,80,000 people live and there remains a risk of natural disasters. Half a dozen volcanoes are active in this island group and there are regular cyclones and earthquakes. This whole area is present on the Pacific Ring of Fire. This includes New Zealand, Japan. Locations include Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, the United States, Canada, Russia, Japan, the Philippines, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, and Antarctica.
Why do more earthquakes occur?
Due to the tectonic plates fighting among themselves, there is continuous active geological movement in this area, where the movement takes the form of an earthquake when it intensifies. The Tsunami that hit India on 26 December 2004 was also caused by the movement of similar tectonic plates. 75 percent of the volcanoes present on Earth are present in the Pacific Ring of Fire. 90 percent of the Earth’s earthquakes occur in this region. It also causes widespread loss of life and money. The area of the Ring of Fire is spread between several tectonic plates. According to estimates, this region covers an area of 40,000 km.
