There was violence even during the elections
There was also a lot of violence in Manipur during voting for the Lok Sabha elections 2024. For this reason, the Election Commission had decided to conduct re-polling at 11 polling stations of Inner Manipur seat. There are two Lok Sabha seats here, but the Commission had decided to conduct voting in two phases for the Outer Manipur seat. There has been continuous violence here for the last one year and now the militants have started attacking the soldiers also.
What is the reason for violence?
People of Kuki, Meitei and Naga communities live in Manipur. About 53 percent of the state’s population belongs to the Meitei community. At the same time, most of the people of Kuki community comprising 40 percent of the population live in the mountains. Naga and Kuki are tribal communities. Meiteis are non-tribal. The Kuki community has been demanding a separate state for a long time, they do not like to live under the rule of the Meitei people. In such a situation, the Meitei community filed a petition in the Manipur High Court saying that they are more in population, but they do not have the right on most of the resources. In such a situation, they should get SC status. The High Court accepted their demand and asked the state government to give SC status to the Meitei community. The Kuki community felt that their rights were being snatched away and since then violence has continued in the state.
