Summary
This port in the Black Sea is currently non-functional and Russian forces are very close to it. If Russian forces come and allow some ships to go, that’s fine, otherwise we’ll need the help of the port authority.
A commercial ship from India has been stuck for some time at the Mykolaiv port in war-torn Ukraine. It has 21 Indian sailors in its crew. All of them are safe and in regular contact with their families, said Sanjay Parashar, founder and CEO of VR Maritime, the ship’s management agency.
Parashar said that along with the Indian ship, 24 other ships are also stranded at the port. The agency is closely monitoring the entire development. The crew has not flown out since the war between Russia and Ukraine broke out last month. A strict vigil is being kept on the ship. There are many Indians in the crew of other ships as well. The ship’s satellite communication system and internet are working.

Parashar said the agency had to evacuate the crew in case of emergency, so the nearest Polish port is 900 km. One will also have to travel 500 km to reach the safe haven Kyiv port. At present it is not possible to reach both these places. Therefore, it is considered safer to stay on the ship than to hide in a bunker somewhere in Ukraine.
Parashar said that the Ministry of External Affairs, Indian Embassy and Directorate General of Shipping have also been apprised of this development. Director General of Shipping Amitabh Kumar could not be reached for comment in this regard.
