India has so far evacuated more than 20 thousand civilians from Ukraine, but there is a problem due to lack of safe passage in Sumi. India has urged both the warring countries to provide an evacuation corridor. India’s Permanent Envoy to the United Nations TS Tirumurti while addressing the Security Council meeting on Monday said that we are making a constant call to end hostilities. The meeting was held to discuss the humanitarian situation in Ukraine.
He said that we are demanding the immediate evacuation of all citizens, including Indian nationals trapped in Ukraine, safely and uninterruptedly. Tirumurti said that we are concerned that despite repeated requests from both sides, our students stranded in Sumi have not been provided with a safe corridor immediately.
He said that India has so far managed to bring back 20,000 Indians safely from Ukraine. We have also helped citizens of other countries when contacted. They were helped to be released to their countries. We are ready for this in the coming days as well. Indians have been evacuated from Ukraine through more than 80 flights. We appreciate the assistance provided by Ukraine and its neighboring countries to help in this work.
700 trapped in Sumi, fierce struggle continues
Around 700 students from India are stranded in Sumi. There has been a fierce conflict between the Russian and Ukrainian forces for several days. Due to heavy bombing and air strikes, India is not able to remove them. To evacuate its citizens from war-torn Ukraine, the Indian government has launched ‘Operation Ganga’. Through this, thousands of people trapped in Ukraine, including a large number of students, have been evacuated. These have been removed from the countries bordering the western borders of Ukraine. However, evacuation from the eastern part of Ukraine remains a challenge.
