Summary
Thousands of apartments have been destroyed in the Russian attack on Ukraine, millions have been made homeless and a million Ukrainians have left the country. On that too the Russian bombing of Zaporizhia nuclear plant has created a very dangerous situation. There is a risk of radiation exposure following a fire in a part of the plant after the attack and disruption of the reactor cooling process. If the plant exploded, the threat of destruction to the whole of Europe is being told.

The mayor of the nearby city of Nehodar, Dmitro Orlov, claims the explosions were heard as the Russian military approached the plant. Dimitro was later taken hostage by the Russian army. Zaporizhia nuclear plant spokesman Andrei Tuz said one reactor was damaged, though not in danger. But nuclear experts have become wary of this, they said, adding that an attack on Europe’s largest nuclear plant could create dangerous situations.

Biden has urged Russia to let experts inspect the plant.
Power plant destroyed…
A Russian air strike destroyed a power generation plant in Okhtyrka. More than 70 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in the attacks.
Danger: If the water supply is stopped, there will be an explosion
Water is supplied to the plant to cool the uranium fuel rods. If there is no electricity, diesel generators are used. Water supply will stop if generators are shut down or diesel runs out. This makes it possible to explode similar to Japan’s Fukushima plant.
According to Professor David Fletcher of the University of Sydney, even by shutting down the reactor, no one will be saved. The cooling system is required even when the reactor is turned off. The IAEA said no damage was found in the reactor. The radioactivity here has been in safe limits since the Russian occupation.
International Court of Justice (ICC) team has gone to Ukraine to investigate war crimes. Chief prosecutor Karim Khan said the investigation team will collect evidence of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. The rules of war law are in force in Ukraine.
This is how these energy units work
- In a nuclear plant, steam is used to spin a turbine to produce electricity. Uranium molecules are broken down in the reactor.
- The core of the reactor contains uranium as fuel in a one-cm slab.
- This tablet has the capacity to generate energy as much as 700 liters of petrol. Setting them in 12 foot long rods make hundreds of bundles of rods. These are called fuel assemblies.
- The core consists of several fuel assemblies. The fission of a uranium molecule releases energy.
- The energy in the plant forms vapor from the water. Steam generates electricity by rotating a turbine.
- Hot rods cool with water.
Ukraine gets 50% of the electricity needed from these plants
- Ukraine has 15 nuclear plants. Zaporizhia is the largest with 6 reactors.
- Each reactor in Zaporizhia produces 950 MW of electricity, starting from 1984 to 1995.
- Of these six, reactor number 4 is still in operation, four reactors are being cooled down and one is running short of fuel.
- Chernobyl, in Ukraine, where the Richter exploded in 1986, is still leaking radioactive material. This too is now in the possession of Russia.
Vedim Boechenko, the mayor of the port city of Mariupol, said on Friday that the city was running out of food after water and electricity. Russian forces have been besieging this city for 5 days but Ukrainian troops have not allowed them to succeed. The mayor has appealed to build a safe corridor for the evacuation of citizens.
Zelensky left Ukraine: Russia
Russian Parliament Duma President Vecheslav Volodin has said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has left the country and gone to Poland. Volodin wrote on his Telegram channel, Zelensky is no longer in Ukraine. His aides in the Verkhovna Rada, the Supreme Council of Ukraine, say they cannot be contacted in Lviv. He is now in Poland. Zelensky had earlier said that he would not leave the country under any circumstances. However, Western countries were concerned about their safety due to the Russian invasion and they were already urged to leave the country. agency
