During the violence that erupted in Sri Lanka after the resignation of Mahinda Rajapaksa, a ruling party MP first shot at protesters, then committed suicide by shooting himself. According to police, protesters outside Nittambuva town tried to stop the vehicle of MP Amarkirthi Athukorla. During this, Amarkirti Athukorla opened fire on the protesters. Two people were shot, one of whom later succumbed to his injuries. After firing on the protesters, MP Amarkirti Athukorla was surrounded by a mob, after which she shot herself and committed suicide.

The mob also torched the house of Sri Lankan MP Arundika Fernando in Kochikade. The protesting mob is now damaging government property as well. The mob also demolished the memorial of DR Rajapaksa in Hambantota. According to the police, the office and house of Johnston Fernando, another loyalist of Mahindra Rajapaksa in Kurunegala town, was also set on fire. More than a dozen vehicles have also been torched in this arson.
