Urban Indians always want to see Olympics happen: Survey

Most urban Indians like to watch football matches

Mumbai, July 15 (IANS)| Due to the nationwide emergency in Japan, the host country of the Olympic Games starting July 23 due to the Kovid-19 pandemic, opinion is divided around the world whether Tokyo should host the Games. According to a global survey conducted by IPSOS, the world’s third largest market research company, only one in two (54 per cent) is in favor of hosting the Indian Olympics.

However, the survey found that 70 per cent of urban Indians are most interested in the Tokyo Olympics. The IPOS Global Survey, conducted in 28 markets, found that six out of 10 global citizens and 78 percent of Japanese citizens now oppose holding the Olympics. But there are countries such as Turkey (71 per cent), Saudi Arabia (66 per cent), Russia (61 per cent) and Poland (60 per cent) that have massive support for the Games. The countries against hosting the Olympics are South Korea (86 per cent), Japan (78 per cent) and Argentina (69 per cent), IPSOS said in a release on Thursday.

Among the countries with urban populations supporting the Olympics, South Africa (59 per cent), China (57 per cent), Poland (56 per cent) and Turkey (56 per cent) followed India. In India, a sample of 500 was surveyed by IPSOS. The least interested countries are Belgium (72 per cent), South Korea (70 per cent), Japan (68 per cent), France (68 per cent) and Germany (67 per cent).

Although the survey concluded that a large number of people globally opposed it, there was overwhelming support for the fact that the Olympics have a positive impact – at least 80 percent of global citizens supported this view while 90 percent of urban Indians and 59 percent of the Japanese agreed to this as well. Overall, the survey found that urban Indians were most interested in football (37 per cent), badminton (36 per cent), tennis (28 per cent), athletics (26 per cent), boxing (17 per cent) and cycling (14 per cent). Huh.

Global citizens were most eager to watch football/soccer (30 per cent), athletics/track and field (27 per cent), gymnastics (21 per cent), volleyball (13 per cent), tennis (12 per cent). Basketball (12 percent), cycling (10 percent), boxing (8 percent) and badminton (6 percent) are next. There was also support for priority vaccination for athletes going to the Olympics, with at least seven out of 10 global citizens supporting it.
