Washington: The Republican-led US House of Representatives on Thursday passed a bill obliging Biden to arm Israel. Along with this, he also reprimanded the Democrats for delaying the supply of bombs. American lawmakers also appealed to Israel to ensure the safety of civilians during the war with Hamas. The Israel Security Assistance Cooperation Act was passed in the House by 224 votes to 187. 16 lawmakers from the Democrats also voted along with the Republicans in favor of giving arms to Israel. While 3 Republicans opposed it and sided with the Democrats.
However, this bill is not expected to become law. But the bill signals deep divisions over America’s Israel policy ahead of a presidential election year. Also, this bill supports Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s objective of completely eliminating the Hamas terrorists who attacked his country on October 7. 1200 Israelis were killed and 253 were abducted in this attack.
More than 35 thousand deaths so far in retaliatory attack
According to Palestine’s official statements, so far 35,722 civilians have been killed in the attack in Gaza. Hunger is at its peak here and most of the population in the coastal region has become homeless after the infrastructure collapsed. Republicans have accused Biden of turning his back on Israel in the face of widespread opposition from Palestinian supporters. Also said that this was a disastrous decision of Biden with global impact. “This is clearly being done for political calculation and we can’t tolerate that,” Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson said during a press conference on Wednesday. At the same time, Democrats accused Republicans of doing politics on this issue and harming Biden’s position on Israel. (Reuters)
