New Delhi. The election for the post of Vice President is going to be held today. Former West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar is in the fray from NDA in this election. The opposition has fielded Margaret Alva against Dhankhar. Voting for this post will be held from 10 am to 5 pm. Members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha will participate in the voting. From the mathematical point of view, Jagdeep Dhankhar’s victory is certain. Margaret Alva seems to be getting far fewer votes than Dhankhar. Talking about the math of votes, there are 237 MPs including 543 from Lok Sabha and nominated by Rajya Sabha. That is, there are total 783 MPs. Of these, 36 TMC MPs will not vote. That is, out of a total of 783, only 747 MPs will choose the Vice President. In such a situation, 374 votes of first preference would be required for victory.
BJP has 303 MPs in Lok Sabha and 91 in Rajya Sabha. In this way she can win Dhankhar on her own. Apart from this, 37 MPs of allies are also supported. At the same time, BJD, YSR Congress, Shinde faction of Shiv Sena, BSP, Akali Dal have also extended their support to Dhankhar. BJD has 21, YSR Congress 31, Shiv Sena’s Shinde faction 12, BSP 11 and Akali Dal 2 MPs. The 5 nominated members are also likely to vote for Dhankhar. In such a situation, Dhankhar is seen getting a total of 528 votes. Which is more than the votes required to win.
If you look at the vote count in favor of the opposition candidate Margaret Alva, Congress has 84, DMK 34, NCP 9, RJD 6, SP 6, TRS 16, Aam Aadmi Party 10, JMM 3 and AIMIM. He seems to be getting the vote of 5 MPs. Apart from this, 7 MPs of Uddhav faction will also vote for Alva. Some other small parties and independents also go with Alva, even then they do not seem to get the 374 votes needed to win in any case.
