Pune. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar gave a controversial statement on Wednesday. Ajit Pawar was discussing about the birth rate of boys and girls. Meanwhile, he said that female feticide has worsened the sex ratio in some parts of the state so much that in future we may have to think about Draupadi.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar addressed a gathering of doctors in Indapur in Pune district. Pawar mentioned the complaints of some gynecologists that they face harassment from the health department in the name of preventing sex determination in pre-natal tests. Responding to the complaints, Pawar said that even though there are cases of harassment, it is also known that illegal things happen in hospitals.
The Deputy Chief Minister said that you know the situation in Beed (where some doctors were arrested for running an illegal abortion racket). Such incidents should not happen. In some districts the male to female ratio is poor, with even 850 females for every 1000 males. Things will get difficult in future as one may have to think about Draupadi (in the context of a woman having multiple husbands). Such a situation may arise.
However, Pawar immediately clarified that his intention was not to hurt anyone’s sentiments by using Draupadi’s example. After this statement, laughter started echoing in the hall, but then people realized that this was not appropriate. After this, Ajit Pawar tried to correct his mistake, but many people did not accept this statement of the Deputy Chief Minister.
