New Delhi: The battle cry for Lok Sabha elections 2024 has started and gradually the fate of the candidates is being captured in EVMs. As the Lok Sabha elections are moving towards its peak, the cases of deepfake videos are also increasing. This is the reason why a petition was filed in the Delhi High Court regarding this. A hearing was held in the Delhi High Court on Thursday on a petition filed demanding a ban on deep fake videos being circulated with the aim of influencing the Lok Sabha elections. However, the High Court refused to give any instructions on this petition.
On behalf of the petitioner, a demand was made to direct the Election Commission to stop the deep fake videos being circulated. On this, Delhi High Court said, ‘We cannot give any instructions to the Election Commission on our behalf in the midst of Lok Sabha elections. The Election Commission is capable of taking action on its own behalf in such cases. We trust the Election Commission. Let us tell you that a petition was mentioned in the Delhi High Court on Wednesday against the spread of deepfake videos during the current Lok Sabha elections.
A bench of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan Singh and Justice Manmeet P S Arora had agreed to list the matter for hearing on Thursday. Referring to this petition for urgent hearing, senior lawyer Jayant Mehta said that this petition has been filed by an organization of lawyers and has requested that the Election Commission be directed to stop the spread of deepfake videos during the elections.
Making clear the need for immediate hearing on this petition, Mehta said that elections are going on and deepfake videos are being spread. He said that the lawyers’ organization has also applied to the Election Commission in this regard. The bench had said that social media platforms now have grievance redressal officers, so whether the petitioners have contacted them or not. Mehta said that whatever they could do, they have done it. He said that by the time action is taken and the videos are removed, the damage has already been done because the action time is 24 to 48 hours. The bench had said that it would investigate and hear the issue on Thursday.
