During a religious meeting in Sangam Vihar area of Delhi, the dispute over playing loudspeakers increased so much that a police officer was attacked by a mob. In this attack, Assistant Sub -Inspector (ASI) wrist was fractured and their uniforms were also torn down. The incident occurred on the night of 4 June when ASI was on emergency duty and tried to stop the use of loudspeakers at the meeting.
Complete case of incident
According to police officials, ASI received an emergency call at around 11:30 pm on June 4, which complained of playing loudspeakers late night in a religious meeting near Sangam Vihar’s street number 1, four Chowk. When the police officers reached the spot, around 200 people were present there. The ASI informed the organizers that the problem of playing loudspeakers is scheduled till 10 pm and now the time has been enough. He said that loudspeakers should be closed. But the organizers rejected the request, which led to a debate between the two sides.
Shortly, the debate turned into a ruckus and a group of people present attacked the police officer. Seeing the situation deteriorating, the ASI tried to call 112, but could not be contacted due to any technical reason. He immediately informed his high officials. After this, when ASI proceeded to seize loudspeakers and amplifiers, around 20-25 people surrounded them and started beating them. During this time a heavy amplifier hit his hand, which broke his wrist. With this, the attackers tore his police uniform and fled from the spot.
Injured ASI admitted to hospital
Police immediately rushed the injured ASI to the hospital, where medical examination confirmed the fracture in their wrist. The police have registered a case against the attack and CCTV footage, mobile videos and local people are being questioned to identify the attackers.
Police response and investigation continues
Police said the investigation team has been formed in view of the seriousness of the case. The attackers are being identified on the basis of video footage and witnesses found during the investigation. Police said that they would not spare criminals under any circumstances and will arrest them as soon as possible. The police officer said, “The attack on police employees will not be tolerated at all. It is our primary duty to maintain law and order and strict action will be taken against whoever violates it.”
Increasing incidents of attacks on policemen in Delhi
This is not the first incident when policemen have been attacked in Delhi. In April, a policeman Prempal was also attacked by the attackers with a knife in Adarsh Nagar. After that incident, he was admitted to Max Hospital in Shalimar Bagh in critical condition. In that case too, the police had formed a team to search for the accused and searched CCTV footage. These incidents of attacks on policemen are increasing the concern of law and order and underlines the need to take strict steps to the police department in terms of security.
An insult to police uniform, question on law and order
The incident of tearing the uniform of the police and badly beating the officer has not only hurt the morale of the police force, but it also raises serious questions on the law and order situation in the whole society. Experts believe that such violent incidents with police personnel are increasing, which can harm the trust between the police and the public. At the same time it is also necessary that the administration create effective strategies to prevent such incidents.
