Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi had abolished inheritance tax after the death of his mother Indira Gandhi in 1984 to save her property from going to the government. He alleged that Congress now wants to bring back this tax. As the intense campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections raised the political temperature, BJP’s star campaigner doubled down on the Congress over its wealth sharing and inheritance tax allegations and vowed to protect the Congress party from its plans to loot people’s wealth.
Addressing a rally in Madhya Pradesh’s Morena, PM Modi stepped up his attack on Congress and accused it of “cutting the hands of the country” by accepting partition on the basis of religion. Voting will be held in Morena on 7th May. PM Modi said that Rajiv Gandhi had abolished inheritance tax in 1985 to save his mother Indira Gandhi’s property from going to the government after her death. Which was a big tax imposed on inherited movable and immovable property.
PM Modi said, ‘Pay attention to the sins that Congress has committed. I want to bring forward an interesting fact. When Indira Gandhi died, there was a law under which half of the property would go to the government. There were discussions that Indira ji had made her will to give property to her son Rajiv Gandhi. PM Modi said that ‘to save money from going to the government, Rajiv Gandhi abolished inheritance tax.’

Taking aim at US-based senior Congress leader Sam Pitroda’s controversial remarks, Prime Minister Modi warned voters that if the main opposition party comes to power, it will take away more than half of people’s income through inheritance tax. PM Modi said that Congress wants to investigate people’s properties and valuables and confiscate their jewelery and small savings. He said, an advisor to the opposition’s ‘prince’ has now suggested imposing inheritance tax. He said Congress now wants to bring back that tax because its four generations have taken advantage of the money that was given to them.
