New Delhi. In Punjab, Amritpal Singh’s father Tarsem Singh has made a big claim regarding his son’s candidature for the Lok Sabha elections. Tarsem Singh said that Amritpal Singh was not interested in contesting the elections, but changed his mind on the insistence of the ‘sangat’ or community. The Sangat wanted him to contest the elections. Chief of ‘Waris Punjab De’ organization Amritpal Singh is currently imprisoned in Dibrugarh jail in Assam under the National Security Act (NSA).
Tarsem Singh said, “Amritpal Singh did not want to contest the elections, but if contesting the elections is the decision of the Sangat, then he will change his decision and bow before the Sangat.” He further said that people are supporting him wherever he goes. Tarsem Singh claimed that people are with him despite the government’s attempts to defame him. He announced that Paramjit Kaur Khalra, wife of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, would lead Amritpal Singh’s election campaign.
Different parties have fielded different candidates for Khadur Sahib seat. Paramjit Kaur Khalra had contested from Khadoor Sahib seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections but lost. Meanwhile, Amritpal Singh’s candidature from Khadur Sahib has received support from Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar), which has withdrawn its candidate from the constituency. Shiromani Akali Dal has fielded former MLA Virsa Singh Valtoha, while AAP has fielded Laljit Singh Bhullar. BJP’s candidate from this seat is Manjeet Singh Manna Mianwind and Congress has fielded former MLA Kulbir Singh Zira.
