Recently, there was a ruckus in the politics of Pakistan and eventually the government there fell and then a new government was formed. Meanwhile, political stir has intensified in Sri Lanka, which is now facing economic crisis. A rebel MP from President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s party has claimed that the opposition has the figure of 113 needed to win a no-confidence motion against the government in the 225-member parliament.
In fact, the rebel MP Uday Gammanapila, who was involved in the Sri Lankan government, has claimed this on Monday. Gammanapila said this could be possible with several MPs breaking ties with the government and main opposition Samagi Jana Balvegaya (SJB), Marxist Janata Vikmuthi Peramuna (JVP) and Tamil National Alliance (TNA) coming together. He said that with the support of all this, the opposition will get the vote of confidence.
He said that we told the SJB to wait till we get 113. But for now we have 120. The SJB began collecting signatures to move a no-confidence motion against the government in early April. This is the same Uday Gammanapila here who openly criticized the then Finance Minister and younger brother of the President, Basil Rajapaksa. He was then dismissed by Rajapaksa.
President Gotabaya, who is facing fierce public protests against his government over its handling of the country’s worst economic crisis, has said he will hand over the government to any group that can garner 113 seats but will not step down from the presidency. Meanwhile, in a letter to Buddhist clergy, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa said that while he respected the advice of the clergy.
The people of Sri Lanka are continuously protesting against the government. On Sunday also, students surrounded the house of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa. A large number of university students had come to the gherao. They were demanding the resignation of the Prime Minister. People in Sri Lanka are struggling for electricity, water and food. Apart from this, there is a severe shortage of foreign exchange with the government. In such a situation, even fuel is not being imported.
Apart from this, there is a big food crisis in the country at this time. The country’s foreign minister Ali Sabri also said that the economic situation there could worsen. Let us tell you that the entire cabinet in Sri Lanka had resigned. The new cabinet was later formed by Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
