Sri Lanka, which is going through a serious economic and political crisis, is in turmoil. Prime Minister Rajapaksa, who resigned on Monday, had to run for his life. According to the information received, Rajapaksa has gone to a naval base. However, fierce protesters surrounded him there too. On the other hand, angry people have burnt the houses of at least 41 ruling leaders. The protesters say that it would have been better if they had done this work earlier. The country would not have been in bad shape.
Heavy demonstrations have been taking place in Sri Lanka for several days. The public is asking the Rajapaksa family to give up power. After this, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned from his post, but his brother still remains in the presidency. Due to which anger is increasing among the people. Hours after the prime minister’s resignation, an angry mob torched the ancestral home of Rajapaksa’s family in Medamulana, Hambantota. Not only this, the protesters also set the houses of many leaders on fire, to which America has also reacted.
The US said it was closely monitoring the volatile situation in Sri Lanka after leaders’ homes were set on fire. Despite the curfew, at least 41 houses of top leaders of the ruling party were torched, according to local media. Hundreds of motorcycles parked in those houses were also burnt. A man standing in front of a minister’s burning house told a local media – “We should have done all this earlier. We’re sorry we didn’t do this earlier.”
According to NDTV, the former prime minister and his family have been sent to the naval base in a helicopter. It was told that protests have also started outside the naval base, about 270 km from the capital Colombo. Thousands of anti-government protesters barged into his official residence in Colombo.
Angry protesters not only attacked the PM’s residence Temple Tree, but also destroyed the Rajapakse Museum. They demolished the Rajapakse Museum in the native village of Rajapaksa’s family. There were also two wax statues of the parents of the Rajapaksa brothers. In addition, the Rajapaksa family’s political office in the north-western town of Kurunegala was also set on fire.
It is worth noting that tourism is an important source of income in Sri Lanka, where many people from other countries come to visit, but the situation has been greatly affected due to the closure of tourism due to Corona epidemic. The government was also forced to impose restrictions on many imports to pay off debt, leading to a serious economic crisis. In April, it was reported that Sri Lanka was repaying foreign debt of $ 51 billion.
