The Indian student killed in the ongoing attack in Ukraine was advised by his family to put up the tricolor of the Indian national flag outside their building for safety. This is known from a video that has surfaced of Naveen of Karnataka, who was killed in Kharkiv in the war between Russia and Ukraine, with his family members.
Naveen Shekharappa, a 21-year-old medical student from Karnataka, was killed in a Russian shelling in Ukraine’s Kharkiv city when he was on his way to collect food from a nearby grocery store. From the video that has surfaced of Naveen and his family members’ phone conversation, it appears that Naveen and other Indian students were taking shelter in a bunker from where ‘only two per cent of the people were able to get out’. When asked why you didn’t leave, Naveen said that there was a lot of rush and the situation was bad.
Naveen’s family told him that if you have a big flag, then put it on your building in which you live. The flag kept showing out. The family said keep the flag, use your language and try to leave.
The Ministry of External Affairs had advised Indian students to leave Kyiv and try to go to the border towns of western Ukraine. But, several videos of students surfaced showing that they were not being allowed to board the trains and were being misbehaved.
The student had said that such information has been received that now trains have started running and there is one train each at 6 am, 10 am and 1 pm. The family had suggested to Naveen that after going 40-50 km away, there could be a way out.
On the other hand, the war between Russia and Ukraine continued for the sixth day on Tuesday. Russian troops are bombarding several cities in Ukraine. Russia is trying to surround the capital Kyiv. In the same sequence, Russia launched attacks targeting Kyiv’s TV tower and other civilian sites, including the main memorial of the Jewish genocide in Ukraine.
