New Delhi. Today, on Wednesday, 28 September, the birth anniversary of Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh, who was a freedom fighter and hanged himself with a smile, is being celebrated across the country. Various programs are being organized across the country to commemorate the birth anniversary of this brave son of Mother India. Continuous efforts are also being made by the central government to make this day special. Chandigarh Airport has been renamed as ‘Bhagat Singh International Airport’. 1.Shaheed Bhagat Singh was born on September 28, 1907, in Banga, Laipur district in Punjab.
2.His father’s name was Kishan Singh and mother’s name was Vidyavati.
3.Bhagat Singh’s father Kishan Singh, uncle Ajit Singh and Swaran Singh were also a freedom fighter.
4.Shaheed Bhagat Singh was educated at DAV High School, Lahore.
5.The Jallianwala Bagh, which took place on Baisakhi day on 13 April 1919, had such a profound effect on 12-year-old Bhagat Singh that he took oath on the bloody soil of Jallianwala Bagh that he would set the fire of freedom against the British government. After this he left his studies and founded the ‘Naujawan Bharat Sabha’.
6.Bhagat Singh along with the freedom fighters Sukhdev and Rajguru also carried out the Kakori incident.
7.He, along with Rajguru and Chandrashekhar Azad, also killed the British officer JP Saunders, who was the Assistant Superintendent of Police in Lahore on 17 December 1928.
8.On 8 April 1929, he, along with Batukeshwar Dutt, threw bombs and pamphlets in the auditorium of the then Central Assembly of British India at Alipore Road, Delhi to wake the British government from sleep.
9.Despite being a Sikh, Bhagat Singh cut his beard and hair to hide his identity for the purpose of carrying out his plan.
10.The slogan ‘Inquilab Zindabad’ given by Bhagat Singh filled a lot of enthusiasm among the youth in the freedom struggle. He used to mention this in his every speech and article.
11.Bhagat Singh was sentenced to death on 7 October 1930.
12.It was decided to hang Bhagat Singh on 24 March 1931, but the British were so scared that he was hanged 11 hours before the scheduled time i.e. 23 March 1931 at 7:30 am.
