Imd alert: Floods and landslides have caused havoc due to continuous heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh. So far, more than 37 people have died and 40 people are missing, the most affected Mandi district. According to the State Disaster Management Authority, this rain has damaged more than Rs 400 crore in the state. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for several districts till 7 July, warning of heavy rainfall.
Alert issued in many districts
IMD has issued an orange alert for Shimla, Solan and Sirmaur on 5 July and Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Chamba and Mandi on 6 July, indicating heavy rains and flood threats. In addition, Yellow Alert has been issued for the rest of the state. During this time, the risk of incidents like heavy rains, floods, landslides and road jam may increase.
Things worsen in market
Landslides and floods have caused heavy havoc due to heavy rains in Mandi district. So far 11 people have died here and 34 people are still missing. Many roads have been blocked and services like electricity, water are disrupted. The team of NDRF, SDRF, local administration and police is engaged in relief operations. Assistance is being sent through helicopters in the villages where the roads are not reaching.
More than 250 roads closed
About 250 roads in the state are closed due to continuous rains and floods and more than 500 power transformers have also been affected. The capital Shimla is also flooded with schools, which has stopped studies and parents are facing difficulties. Also, around 700 drinking water schemes have also been affected. The Meteorological Department has issued more rain alert in the next few days. The state government and administration are on high alert, and NDRF, SDRF and other machinery have been prepared for relief operations.
