The BCCI on Tuesday sold the media rights of the IPL for Rs 48390 crore ($6 billion, 200 million) between 2023 and 2027, signing the biggest broadcast deal in the history of cricket. The TV rights for the Indian subcontinent were bought by Disney Star for Rs 23575 crore (Rs 57.5 crore per match) but the digital rights went to Reliance’s Viacom 18 for Rs 20,500 crore. Now IPL is the second largest sports league in the world by cost per match.
Viacom also bought a C package of ‘non-exclusive’ rights for Rs 2991 crore. The A and B packages include 410 matches over the next five years (74.74 matches in 2023 and 2024, 84.84 matches in 2025 and 2026 and 94 matches in 2027). Viacom bid through a consortium that includes former Star India chief Uday Shankar (Bodhi Tree) and James Murdoch (Lupa Systems).
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah tweeted, “I am happy to announce that Star India has bought the TV rights of India for Rs 23575 crores. This is the hallmark of BCCI’s organizational ability despite going two years in the Corona pandemic. It has touched new heights through which the result is Rs 48390 crores. Now IPL is the second largest sports league in the world by cost per match.

The IPL will now be on par with the most-watched sporting events such as the National Football League in the US, the National Basketball League and the English Premier League in England, based on evaluation. With this the monopoly of the single broadcaster also ended. Sony had bought the broadcast rights for the first ten years (2008 to 2017) for Rs 8200 crore while Star bought 16347 crores for the next five years. 50 crore was given.
Package C included the rights to 18 ‘non-exclusive’ matches that Viacom 18 had for 2991 . Bought for Rs 6 crore i.e. 33 per match. 24 crores. There are 90 matches in this package. Package D had foreign TV and digital rights which Viacom18 and Times Internet bought for Rs 1,300 crore.
There is a 100% increase in the price of each IPL match from the last time. Last time each match 54. 5 crores which has now become Rs 114 crores per match. Every match at the global level 14. 61 million dollars, which is second only to the NFL. Each match of the NFL is worth 17 million dollars.
