If the rain disrupts and the game is not possible in regular time, then the winner of the 15th season of the Indian Premier League i.e. IPL 2022 can be decided by the Super Over. As per the IPL guidelines, if the situation becomes that it is not possible to bowl even a single over, the IPL Points Table will be used. In that the IPL champion will be decided based on the position of the teams.
These rules will also apply to Qualifier 1, Eliminator, Qualifier 2. There are no reserve days for these matches. Reserve day has been kept on 30th May for the title match. This match is to be played from 8 pm onwards. The Super Over method is being used for the first time to determine the winner in a rain-affected match. Normally in T20 Internationals, if the option of five overs is not possible, the match is called off.
The IPL play-off matches will begin with Qualifier One between Gujarat Titans and Rajasthan Royals at the Eden Gardens ground in Kolkata. Inclement weather has been predicted in Kolkata during that time. In such a situation, in view of the possibility of disruption in the match due to rain, IPL has issued guidelines regarding play-off matches.
On Tuesday, 24 May 2022, Rajasthan Royals will face Gujarat Titans in the first qualifier. The next day, the teams of Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bangalore will face each other in the Eliminator match at the same ground.
The second qualifier and final match are to be played in Ahmedabad on Friday (27 May) and Sunday (29 May) respectively. As per the IPL guidelines, ‘The number of overs in each play-off match, if required, can be reduced to a minimum of five overs batted for each team.’
“In both the eliminator and the qualifiers, if five overs of play is not completed after extra time and if conditions permit, the winner of the respective eliminator or qualifier match shall be decided by a Super Over,” it said.
The guidelines also said, “If the Super Over is not possible, the team in the top position in the points table after the regular season of 70 matches will be declared the winner of the respective play-off match or final.” If the final starts on May 29 and a single ball is bowled, the match will resume on the next day from where it stopped.
If no play is possible after the toss in the final, the teams will toss again on Reserve Day. In the guidelines issued by the IPL, it has also been said that the playing time in the reserve day will be the same i.e. five hours and 20 minutes. This includes two additional hours available in the event of any disruption or rain.
