Sri Lanka had won the five ODI series against Australia on 21 June 2022 itself, but on 24 June 2022 the visiting team returned. Australia won the last and fifth ODI of the series with 63 balls to spare. They beat Sri Lanka by 4 wickets. Wicketkeepers Alex Carey and Marnus Labuschagne played an important role in his victory. Both shared a 51-run partnership for the 5th wicket.
Labuschagne departs after scoring 31 runs. Alex Carey remained unbeaten on 45. Earlier Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to bat. However, his decision proved to be wrong and the entire team returned to the pavilion for just 160 runs in 43.1 overs. The Sri Lankan innings would have been reduced to within 100 runs had bowler Chamika Karunaratne not scored 75 runs in 75 balls. He was adjudged player of the match.
Sri Lanka lost 8 wickets for 85 runs in 24.2 overs. Karunaratne then took the score to 160 runs. Chasing the target, Australia scored 164 runs in 39.3 overs for the loss of 6 wickets and won the match. Apart from Chamika Karunaratne, only wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis (26), Aslanka (14) and Pramod Madhusudan could touch double figures for Sri Lanka.
For Australia, Pat Cummins 22 runs, Matthew Kuhneman 26 runs and Josh Hazlewood took 2-2 wickets for 22 runs. Glenn Maxwell and Cameron Green also managed to take a wicket each. Australia too had a poor start. He lost 3 wickets in 19 runs in 5.2 overs. After this, Mitchell Marsh and Marnus Labuschagne shared a 31-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Marsh was dismissed after scoring 24 runs.
After Marsh, Alex Carey took one end and ensured the team’s victory. Meanwhile, Glenn Maxwell was dismissed after scoring 16 runs. Cameron Green remained unbeaten on 25 off 26 balls. Dunith Velage took 3 wickets for 42 runs for Sri Lanka. Mahesh Thikshana also managed to take 2 wickets. Australia won the first ODI of the series by 2 wickets. After this, in the second, third and fourth ODIs, Sri Lanka won by 26 runs, 6 wickets and 4 runs.
Kusal Mendis was adjudged Player of the Series. He scored the highest 223 runs in 4 matches in the series. Pat Cummins topped the list of highest wicket takers. He took 6 wickets. Dunith Velage also took 6 wickets in 4 ODIs, but Cummins took 6 wickets in 3 matches, so he remained on top.
