Despite a resounding victory over New Zealand in the second Test at the Trent Bridge Stadium in Nottingham, hosts England lost a crucial two points in the World Test Championship. The ICC has said that the Ben Stokes-led England team was found guilty of maintaining a slow over-rate during the match. As a result, all players were fined 40% of the match fee. However, more importantly, his two WTC points were also reduced.
Richie Richardson of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees deducted England’s two points for being two overs short of the target. After the win against New Zealand, England’s number of points had gone up to 42, but now that they have lost two points, this number has come down to 40. In the World Test Championship points table, England are at number 8 with 40 points. England’s percentile (point percentage) has also been affected due to the cut of marks. It has now come down from 25 to 23.80.
In addition, in accordance with Article 16.11.2 of the Playing Conditions of the ICC World Test Championship, a team’s point is deducted for an over being bowled less. As a result, England have been deducted 2 points from their total World Test Championship points. According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, England players were also fined 40% of their match fees for slow over-rates.
Players are fined 20 percent of the match fee for every over that their team fails to bowl within the stipulated time. There was no need for a formal hearing, as England captain Ben Stokes accepted the charges and sentencing by on-field umpires Michael Gough and Paul Reiffel, third umpire Rod Tucker and fourth umpire Martin Saggers.
