Bhopal. The death of a buffalo and its calf due to dog bite in a village in Madhya Pradesh has created panic among people, forcing them to be hospitalized for rabies vaccine. The incident is from a village in Gwalior district.
The people of the village became worried as the news of the death of the buffalo and its calf spread on Thursday. They panicked and rushed to a local health center as they drank the milk of a dying buffalo.
On hearing the news of the death of the buffalo, people one after the other rushed to get the rabies vaccine.
The medical staff was shocked by the large gathering of people and they came to know that a buffalo and its calf have died due to the bite of a mad stray dog.
A doctor posted at the hospital in Dabra town of Gwalior district said, “This caused a stir in the village when hundreds of people came to know that the ‘raita’ they ate at a religious function was made from the curd of the same buffalo. So, they rushed to the hospital to get the vaccine.”
According to reports, milk of the same buffalo was also delivered to many homes. People were horrified to learn that the dog who had bitten them was insane.
As soon as this news spread, people started getting scared that they might get rabies from milk and curd.
With a limited stock of rabies vaccine, about 1,000 people gathered there had to struggle hard to convince the medical staff. They all wanted to get vaccinated to protect themselves.
As the situation worsened, the officials of Gwalior Medical College and Infectious Disease Center had to go to Dabra area to control the situation.
With the high demand for rabies injections, the anti-rabies stock in PHCs also got depleted.
He further said that around 1,000 people wanted to take the anti-rabies dose, but only one of them got the vaccine. However, 150 people did not agree and were vaccinated. Many of those who were not vaccinated even approached private hospitals for vaccination.
