Lucknow. In more than 100 villages of Uttar Pradesh, ‘House Astronomy Labs’ have now been set up in local government schools using Panchayat funds. These laboratories are equipped with a telescope, spectrometer and various educational models showing Newton’s laws of motion.
According to the spokesperson of the UP government, charts highlighting various aspects of astronomy have been put up everywhere.
A pilot project was started on Teachers’ Day in 2021 at Secunderabad (Rural) of Bulandshahr. Under this, 109 laboratories have been established in the district within a period of six months.
Bulandshahr Chief Development Officer Abhishek Pandey said that we had proposed this project to around 160 gram panchayats and 100 had agreed to set up these laboratories using their own funds. The cost of each lab is around Rs 2.5 lakh.
Pandey has been a champion of ‘experiential learning’ in schools and communities.
“The astronomy laboratories being set up in primary and upper-primary schools are built around the new education policy that aims to ignite space curiosity at the community level. We want to involve both children and adults in this and create ‘citizen science’ Want to explore the possibilities of ‘.
He said that in scientific research activities the general public is using the tools and resources made available to them.
Laboratories have generated great interest in astronomy among children as well as adults.
Every evening the women of the village line up to look at the stars.
This effort has led to the rise of ‘Astronomers’ among select school students with a keen interest in science. These messengers act as guides and also assist teachers in the management of laboratories.
