Jerusalem. Several Israeli government websites were damaged in an apparent cyberattack. The country’s cyber authority has confirmed that it was a DDoS attack that blocked access to government websites and all websites were back online. According to Haaretz, the websites of the ministries of the interior, health, justice and welfare were taken offline, as were those of the prime minister’s office.
Earlier on Monday, a senior defense official confirmed to Haaretz that a large-scale cyberattack against Israeli government websites was carried out on Monday evening, and cybersecurity industry sources said the operation was a widespread distributed denial. Service (DDoS) attack.
A source in the defense establishment claims that it was the biggest ever cyber attack against Israel. The report said that they believe that some state actor or large organization carried out the attack, but it is yet to be determined who is behind it.
The Defense Establishment and the National Cyber Directorate have declared a state of emergency to study the extent of the damage, while checking strategic Israeli websites and government infrastructure, such as Israel’s electricity and water companies, to see if whether they were also attacked.
The defense establishment claims that the attack affected websites using the dot.gov.il domain, which is used for all government websites except defense-related websites. Another website that uses this domain is the government database. Despite this, some websites can still be accessed through a smartphone.
