Kolkata. Amid the controversy over administering Charaka’s oath to the first year students of the Calcutta Medical College Hospital instead of the traditional Hippocratic oath, Principal of the prestigious college Dr Raghunath Mishra on Tuesday said that this was done by the authorities of the 187-year-old medical college of the National Medicine. This has happened due to a mistake in understanding the correspondence of the Commission (NMC).
This clarification from the college administration comes a day after the first year students of this prestigious medical institution were asked to take ‘charak oath’ (oath in the name of the author of an ancient Indian medical code). This ‘Charak oath’ has been opposed by various medical forums in the past as well. The Charaka oath is referenced in the Charaka Samhita, an ancient Sanskrit text related to Ayurveda, which prescribed a code of conduct for practitioners in ancient Indian medicine.
Mishra told PTI-language, “A few days back, there was a video conference with the officials of NMC. There was a reference to the Charaka oath during that conference. Our staff and officers mistakenly mistook it as an official guideline (to be compulsorily followed) and first year students were administered the oath. Got the official guidelines.
“There is no instance where we have administered ‘Charak oath’. We only follow the age-old practice of administering the Hippocratic oath.” The Medical Service Center, an association of doctors and the DSO unit of the Calcutta Medical College, on Tuesday protested the “Charak” oath administered to first-year students. threatened to do.
Dr. Angshuman Mitra, Secretary, Medical Services Centre, said, “This is against the spirit of the long-established tradition of the medical profession, where trainee students take the Hippocratic Oath. This is an attempt to implement the principle propagated by the RSS and the BJP.” IDSO Medical Unit spokesperson Dr. Soumyadeep Roy told PTI, “We are surprised how this happened in a premier medical college of the country. ” He said that his forum would lodge a protest against this decision.
