President Volodymyr Zelensky called for a ceasefire, saying in his desperate statement, “Many cities in the country are under attack.” On Saturday, Russian forces claimed control of the Ukrainian city of Melitopol, but it is not yet clear how much of Ukraine is in control of the war.
However, the Ukrainian administration has also claimed to have fired missiles on the residential buildings of Ukraine on Saturday. Meanwhile, Ukrainians holding rifles are firing on the streets. A civilian has died after Russians fired shots at a speeding armored vehicle. Ukraine has urged people between the ages of 18 and 60 to fight.
The fleeing men were dragged off the trains
According to estimates by the UN refugee agency UNHCR, more than a million people have left their homes in Ukraine. The agency fears that if the situation worsens, about 4 million people may be forced to take refuge in other countries. Currently, people migrating from Ukraine are taking refuge in Romania, Poland, Moldova, Slovakia and Hungary. There are reports that men are being stopped from going out of the country. Many of the men were pulled out of cross-border trains so that they could compete with the Russian army. Children and women are being allowed to flee.
Ukraine’s female parliamentarian Kira picked up the rifle
Now even lawmakers have taken up arms to defend Ukraine. On Saturday, Ukraine’s MP Kira Rudik shared a picture of herself on Twitter in which she is seen holding a gun. The 36-year-old woman MP is a member of the Voice Party and an MP since 2019.
Rudick told CNN that we were given Kalashnikov rifles and if Russian forces entered Kiev, we would fight them. I don’t know if you are able to hear or not but there is firing behind me here. Kira said that it is my duty to stay here. Me and my colleague have taken up arms. Prior to becoming an MP, Keira was the COO of the smart security company Ring, which was acquired by Amazon in 2018.
He blew himself up along the bridge to stop Russian troops
A Ukrainian brave soldier is being discussed fiercely amidst the ongoing war in Russia-Ukraine. According to media reports, Ukrainian Army soldier Vitaly Volodymyrovich Shakun blew himself up along the bridge to prevent Russian troops from entering his country.
In fact, when the Russian army was advancing rapidly in the Kherson area near Crimea, Vitaly himself went ahead and blew up the bridge through which Russian soldiers could reach the urban area. Vitaly was an engineer in a battalion of Marines on the Crimean Isthmus. The task of blowing up the bridge was done voluntarily by Vitaly.
Pope reached Russian Embassy in Rome, expressed concern over the war
Pope Francis, the highest religious leader of Christians, took an extraordinary initiative to visit the Russian Embassy in Rome and appealed to stop the ongoing war in Ukraine and expressed his concern about the war. The Pope then assured a top Greek Catholic leader in Ukraine that he would do whatever he could to stop the war.
This initiative of the Pope is considered extraordinary because usually all the heads of state and diplomats come to the Vatican to meet the Pope. Under diplomatic protocol, the foreign minister of the Vatican should have summoned the Russian ambassador. But he himself reached the Russian embassy.
